Dwayne Johnson continues to move further away from the big, bad boy he represented while wrestling in the ring as ‘The Rock’, with the recent release of his new kids movie, the Tooth Fairy.
The once bad-ass, mean and scary looking fighter has kept his manners in check in the Tooth Fairy, where he plays an Ice Hockey player turned tooth fairy.
The plot is actually reminiscent of Johnson’s career.
Johnson plays the role of Derek, a big hitting famous hockey player, known around the world for knocking out his opponents’ teeth.
Nearing the end of his career, Derek slowly becomes bitter and rude to those younger than him, telling a junior player he will never make it big, and then almost spilling the beans to a six year-old the Tooth Fairy doesn’t exist.
That night, during his sleep, Derek is punished by the kingdom of fairies who enforce him top do two weeks as a real Tooth Fairy. While the plot may sound quite average and boring, it is actually quite funny at times, and the performance by Johnson is not all that bad, and actually quite impressive at times.
This humour is brought on more so when we are introduced to two seasoned professionals in the Tooth Fairy trade, Crystal and Judd, who take Derek under the wings, not literally. Derek does some funny things during his time, such as camping it up as his boss, behind gauzed lenses and trying to sneak dollar coins uder kids pillow during the night.
All in all, the Tooth Fairy is not all that bad, and at times really funny.
